Try This – Can Multivitamins Prevent Dementia?

Hi Everyone!

What is the thing we fear most as we get older?

Losing our memory!

Devastating diseases such as Alzheimer’s and dementia are becoming all too common. One in four adults above the age of 65 has an increased risk of developing dementia or Alzheimer’s.

And get this: the risk doubles every five years!

Changes in brain health don’t start suddenly either. The foundation for brain-health decline is often set decades before the manifestation of these diseases. That means people in their 20s, 30s, 40s, and 50s should be thinking about protecting their brains now

Even if you have a family history of dementia or Alzheimer’s or an increased risk of developing these diseases, there is so much that you can do to take control of your health. Remember, epigenetics accounts for 80 percent of our health outcomes—which means only 20 percent is dictated by our genes!

If your genes are working against you, you just have to be a little more diligent about your healthy habits, like me!

But remember, we have so much information available at our fingertips that can support the prevention of chronic disease.

In fact, an article was just released that showcased the power of one supplement in particular that can significantly reduce cognitive decline and improve our memories.

This supplement might already be sitting in your drawer, and hopefully, this article will inspire you to make taking it a daily habit.

Can you guess what it is?

Let’s dive in…

When Supplements Matter

We’ve known for some time now that certain deficiencies are common in individuals with cognitive decline—vitamins D, B12, and B6 and folic acid among them. One mechanism that makes these nutrients super important is their role in lowering inflammation in the body. Elevated levels of hs-CRP and homocysteine (two markers of inflammation) have been associated with an increased risk of developing Alzheimer’s and dementia.

Getting the right amount of nutrients is so important when preventing these diseases, but can we get all of our nutrients from food?

Unfortunately, it’s really hard. Even if you eat the “perfect” diet, our depleted soils, busy schedules, and lack of food diversity make it really difficult to get everything that we need from food.

This is why supplementing is important.

The COSMOS trial is a clinical study that looked at the impact of cocoa flavanols and multivitamins in the role of our overall health and the prevention of major chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer, and more.

Last week, researchers released findings from the clinic subcohort trial of this study that looked at the role of multivitamins in preventing cognitive decline. In this randomized clinical trial, 573 participants were closely monitored and given detailed exams at baseline and then again after two years. To support their findings, a meta-analysis including over 5,000 individuals from COSMOS substudies was also used. What researchers found was pretty astonishing!

Compared to a placebo, multivitamins seemed to improve episodic memory (i.e., learning and storing information). The results of the meta-analysis also showed improvements in episodic memory and a reduction in cognitive aging by two years!

Basically, older adults who were taking multivitamins in this study had significantly lower rates of cognitive decline and memory loss.

This is incredible! Taking a multivitamin is one simple intervention that most of us have access to that can make a huge difference in our brain health.Try This: Make Your Multi a Habit

In the spirit of keeping things simple, today’s Try This is super straightforward because that is exactly what we need sometimes: basic, doable interventions that take less than one minute.

Step 1: Get a high-quality multivitamin with a wide variety of micronutrients. Chances are you already have one!Step 2: Remember to take it regularly! If you have a tough time with this, stack taking your supplements, like a high-quality multi, with a habit that you’ve already mastered.

For example, I’ve realized that a high-protein, satiating breakfast is the best way to start my day, so I always pair that breakfast with my multivitamins. And I always pair my dinner with my evening supplements, like magnesium. That way, I don’t have to think about when and where to take my supplements. It’s all planned out already. It sounds stupidly simple, but hey—it works!

In closing, I just want to remind you that sometimes the best health advice is simply doubling down on things we already know are good for us but that we might have forgotten about.

Be sure to send this newsletter to anyone who is concerned about or looking to optimize their brain health. It could make a huge difference!
